There’s something about the shifting seasons that calls us back to the hook. The slower pace, the golden light, the quiet pull toward handmade things. Autumn has a way of inviting us to slow down and stitch something with heart, and I can’t think of a better way to welcome the season than with the launch of something very dear to me: Vintage-Contemporary Granny Squares: Series One, my brand-new eBook for beginners, and the beginning of a heartfelt new collection.

This eBook is the first in a four-part series drawn from a larger body of work: 25 vintage-contemporary granny square designs in total. Originally, I imagined them all living together in a single, hard-backed book, something to treasure, to flip through beside a crackling fire or a window full of rain, but life doesn’t always mirror our romantic visions.
Still, that doesn’t diminish the romance within the designs themselves.
So instead, I’ve lovingly curated the collection into four unique eBooks, each tailored to different skill levels, from gentle, beginner-friendly squares like those in Series One, to more textured, intricate patterns for advanced crocheters in the upcoming volumes. These digital editions are no less meaningful. They're a celebration of what can be made real: beauty, craft, and connection.
Granny squares hold a special kind of magic. They’re familiar, grounding, and endlessly versatile. Passed through generations, sometimes unchanged, sometimes re-imagined, but always stitched with care.
This series is my way of honouring that legacy while giving it a gentle, modern twist. I wanted each square to feel like it belonged in a storybook cottage or tucked into the corner of a stately home, charming, quietly elegant, and rich with timeless appeal. In a world that’s always rushing, we need a little slow beauty, and for me, granny squares are exactly that.
The Heart Behind the Collection
Living away from England has also given me a deeper appreciation for everything timeless and beautiful about the countryside I grew up with. There’s something about distance that sharpens the soul’s memory... of misty mornings, Tudor timber frames, black-and-white cottages nestled in quiet lanes. Victorian and Edwardian classics, floral wallpapers, lace curtains, and the echo of old stories in stone walls… these are the images that always call me back to my heart-land, and through this series, I hope to honour that feeling with every square.
In our first eBook curated for beginners, each square has its own personality and mood, inspired by the grace of English countryside life in times gone by.
From top left to bottom right..

- Lavender Lace is soft and delicate, airy as linens drying on a warm breeze
- Primrose Walk is crisp and structured, like a garden path lined with spring blossoms
- Rosewood Cottage, the favourite so far, is rich, ornate, and quietly regal, like something you’d find in the parlour of a Victorian home
- Heirloom Hearth brings warmth and tradition, like something passed lovingly from hand to hand
- Windsor Bloom adds floral elegance, inspired by manicured grounds and old stone walls
- Lastly, Misty Morning Web captures the hush of early light, spun with subtle texture and calm
Each square was designed not just to be beautiful, but
approachable. These aren’t advanced or intimidating motifs, they’re gentle, beginner-friendly companions to pair with your yarn and a cup of tea. The most complex stitch you’ll encounter is a simple puff stitch, and while the designs are easy to follow, they work up to look far more intricate than they are, offering that satisfying balance of elegance and ease.
A Note to Beginners (and the Hesitant)
If you’re still finding your feet with crochet, this eBook was made for you.
You only need to know the basics (perhaps with a puff stitch or two as a new adventure). Everything is written in US terminology, and I’ve included chart patterns alongside the written ones to support visual learners, beautifully designed by the very talented Misi.
The squares are all designed to be roughly the same size too, using the same yarn weight and hook size, so they can be mixed and matched with ease, ideal for cushions, blankets, or even garments if you’re feeling creative.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence. About enjoying the rhythm of the hook and seeing something lovely take shape in your hands.
What You’ll Find Inside
- 6 unique granny square patterns
- US terminology + matching chart patterns for more visual learners
- All beginner-friendly
- Soft vintage style with a modern twist
- Squares are all the same size (approx.), ready to combine
You can print your copy, add it to your HappyBerry collection, or simply enjoy it as a little creative retreat whenever you need it.
A Look Ahead
And this is just the beginning...
All 25 vintage-contemporary squares have been designed, ready to go, so Series Two is already in the works, with more intricate, textured squares being curated from the collection for those ready to take a deeper step into vintage-inspired design.
And it won’t stop there. A new chapter is already taking shape, one that explores the quiet beauty of geometric design. While our vintage series leans into soft florals and countryside charm, this upcoming collection will play with symmetry, structure, and the bold simplicity of shape. Think tessellated patterns, interlocking motifs, and echoes of tilework. It’s a new kind of rhythm, still deeply rooted in tradition, but with a fresh, clean-lined aesthetic that brings another dimension to the granny square’s story.
But for now, let’s savour the start. If your hook’s been calling to you lately, or you just want a project that brings a little calm and beauty to your day, Series One of our vintage collection is waiting for you!
Thank you, as always, for supporting what we do. Every eBook purchased helps keep HappyBerry patterns free and accessible for all.
