Looking for a charming mini Christmas decoration to brighten your home this holiday season? In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to crochet a small Christmas wreath using a 10cm polystyrene ring, adding festive details like holly leaves with berries, mini mushrooms, and a tiny robin on top. This cosy project is perfect for crochet enthusiasts of all levels and makes a delightful gift or ornament!
Materials You’ll Need
- 10cm polystyrene ring
- Yarn in your choice of Christmas colours (green for leaves, red for berries, natural tones for mushrooms, shades of brown, black and red for the robin)
- Crochet hook suitable for your yarn
- Yarn needle & scissors
- Toy stuffing (for robin and mushrooms)
Step 1: Covering the Polystyrene Ring
Firstly we need to take some measurements.
Measure around the whole circumference of your poly ring. This one was about 30cm.
Then measure around the arm of the ring. This one was about 7.5cm.
Next we need to crochet a flat rectangle that measures 7.5cm wide and about 25cm long. You may be asking "
why not 30cm long?" but this is too long and our rectangle will bunch up on the inside and not sit flat. It's better to crochet slightly less to avoid this and to stretch our rectangle over our ring.
Once we have our rectangle, cover your ring and sew each side together on the inside.
Now we can decorate!

Tip: Use sparkly yarns or crochet in rows of different colours for added interest!
Step 2: Adding Winter Leaves (Holly)
To give your wreath a festive look, why not crochet some Holly leaves or other Autumnal leaves. I have over 40 different leaves and flowers you can choose from as well as Autumnal and Winter themed eBooks.

If making Holly leaves, I like to add small red berries between the leaves for a traditional touch. To do this crochet a ch4 loop or magic ring in red yarn, crochet 6sc into the centre then work 2 rounds of 1sc in each stitch around. Fasten off and sew remaining hole closed.
Step 3: Adding Mini Mushrooms
I think crocheting some mini mushrooms add a whimsical detail to your wreath. You can crochet small mushroom caps using red or brown yarn and add tiny white spots with embroidery or beads. Then make small beige or white stems using single crochet.

Attach your leaves and mushrooms around the wreath using a yarn needle, spacing them evenly.
Step 4: Designing the Tiny Robin
For the finishing touch, I designed a tiny crochet robin.
Crochet the body using a light brown yarn, adding a small red chest and use a darker brown for the wings. I then added some facial details in black.

- Sport/Baby weight yarn (2) in light and dark brown, red and black

Wings
In dark brown yarn crochet [3sc, 1hdc, 3dc, 1hdc] in a 4ch loop or magic ring, sl st in first sc to join, sl st in next 5 sts, ch2, sl st in same st as previous sl st, sl st in next 3 sts. Fasten off and sew onto body. Repeat for second wing.
Beak & Eyes
In black yarn ch4, fasten off and sew ends into head to form a small beak.
Cut two shorts lengths of black yarn, tie 2 knots into the centre of each length, then sew ends into head so knot catches on outside to form an eye.
Attach the robin to the top of the wreath, making it the centerpiece! Secure the robin well so it sits upright and doesn’t shift.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
Check that all decorations are firmly attached. Adjust leaves, berries, and mushrooms for an even, balanced look. Optionally, attach a small ribbon at the top for hanging.
This 10cm crochet wreath is quick and satisfying to make, perfect for small spaces, doors, or as a gift. A festive way to practice small crochet motifs (like leaves, berries, and animals) and fully customisable, you can change colours or add different decorations!
I hope you enjoy!
